Collateral Damage

Alex was holding Bam's hand tightly as the London evening started to darken and the lights across Westminster bridge were starting to twinkle. He kept looking up from his seat and Bam's hand which was starting to sweat a little to see the Southbank in all it's glory.

He ignored Bam whilst still holding her hand, and was starting to think of all the possibilities he had at his feet in the mega city London had become over the years. "Alex please, help me", Bam cried yet again in that annoying high pitched squeaky voice he had started to hate for a few months now.

He had been planning this day for ages now that he had met Jude. She was a much better fit for him and he thought now that he had gained a good paying job at a big IT firm in Soho. He was already in love with Jude, and although he had been house hunting with Alex he had been planning this event for some time now.

Jude was a more suitable partner for him to be walking the London streets with he had thought. Bam's hand was getting slippery with all the sweat and he tried to reassure her. "Don't worry, I've got you babe, it's going to be alright", he lied though his perfect white grill of teeth.

He thought too much of himself and saw a reflection in the glass of the two of them. He tried to imagine Bam wasn't there, replacing the image with Jude. Two perfect people with, perfect teeth. Not a woman with a crooked chipped front tooth that Bam thought made her look cutesy and interesting.

She was always talking at parties about how she had chipped her tooth as a child when falling down the stairs whilst chasing a walking toy bunny rabbit that had mistakenly walked off the top floor of her childhood home and decided to plumet head first down the stairs, and as she chased it they both fell downstairs together. Bam thought this story was a classic, and it did make people laugh when she told it.

The similarity between the situation now and then was not lost on Alex. Bam would be getting more than a chipped tooth in this story. "Please baby I'm slipping, help me", Bam cried again, and Alex pretended to readjust his grip on her hand and placed his other hand on her arm. "Don't worry, I can see the firemen below" Alex called out, as he spotted the specks of people all staring up at the two of them on the stuck big wheel.

It seemed like they didn't want to move the wheel in case it made Alex lose grip of Bam's hand and the hundreds of eyes stared at them from the big drop below. "Bam, whatever happens, I want you to know, I love you", he lied to her as he started to loosen his grip on her, pretending it was by accident.

"I love you too", Bam replied to her duplicitous boyfriend. He was about to lose her for real. From the top of the cart he had deliberately not shut the door properly from when they entered, he started to lose Bam's hand and arm.

Inch by inch he pretended to lose her arm. "I'm sorry" Alex said as he blew a fake kiss at Bam hanging in the dark nights sky from the top of the London Eye which the cart had opened with a sly kick of the half closed door.

His hand slowly let loose of Bam's arm and he cried out the last ever words his girlfriend would hear, a lie, and a well acted performance. "I love you" he screamed, as he totally let loose of his girl and he watched Bam as she fell from the top of the wheel in slow motion towards the earth and certain death.

It was just collateral damage in a love story between him and Jude he convinced himself as the wheel started to move again and he got ready to act distraught at the loss of his girlfriend to the Firemen and Police waiting below.
