John was sitting on the bench across from the old cinema on Main St, his phone suddenly beeped, and he knew his date was overdue.
He fingered his shirt, feeling the buttons one by one from the bottom up making sure they were all attached.
The police car sirens wailed past yet again, and he wondered how many more times the cars would be chasing up and down the busy road.
His phone beeped once more, and now he knew his date was late. It was 10 minutes past the arranged time they were supposed to meet.
A date that had been arranged by his friend Paul at work who thought Suzie would be an ideal match for him.
He wasn’t sure as it had been so long since his wife had left he was uncomfortable at the idea of meeting someone new.
The birds above could be heard leaving their perches and squeaked as they flew overhead. He sucked his lip and wondered where Suzie could be.
The Police sirens wailed again, and he wondered whether it was the same car going in circles looking for someone or was it just a crime ridden night in Reading.
He sat back in the bench and stroked the back of his neck thinking about the possibilities of meeting someone new.
He was scared. Scared of not knowing what to say, or how to act, it had been so long.
He sat forward to rub his knee and his phone beeped again. “Oh shit”, he thought, she was now really late, the third beep was his signal that he should really think about leaving.
Had he been stood up he thought as he got up from the bench ready to leave his date.
Just as another siren could be heard in the distance, he heard a voice.
“Hello, hello, is that John?”, he could hear the female voice.
He turned towards the direction of the lady and responded.
“Yes, it is, are you Suzie?” he replied.
“That’s me, sorry I’m late, I had some trouble on the bus”, she replied, and he smiled. He hadn’t been stood up at all.
He put out his hand to greet Suzie, not sure what to make of her, and then felt her hand take his.
“I am so sorry for being late” She said again, “let me take a look at you” she softly spoke.
Her hand left his and slowly worked its way up his smartly pressed shirt and jacket, before slowly stroking his face, feeling his nose, and gently passing his cheek, and brushing his forehead, before feeling the tips of his hair, and rubbing his ears.
“Oh, yes, you are a catch aren’t you” she sweetly spoke.
“Thank you” John replied, before picking up his white cane and taking grip of Suzie’s hand.
This would be a good blind date he hoped. Literally, and only time will tell how it would end up.
